Why Join The Competent Persons Scheme?
You do not have to join a Competent Persons Scheme. However it makes good sense. On 1st June 2007, Home Information Packs are available and will make the process very easy for a conveyancing solicitor to find out how works have been completed.
If you work on a project which is defined under the Building Regulations, you can either notify building control at significant cost or self-certify by joining a Competent Persons Scheme. If you don’t, you put your customers’ homes at risk of being devalued.
Approximately 90% of works undertaken in the domestic home by a plumbing or heating engineer require notification to building control or certification through a Competent Persons Scheme.
Joining could not be easier or more cost-effective than with APHC’s Competent Persons Scheme. The costs of joining can easily be recouped from the customer with a modest £25.00 certification charge. With the average plumbing and heating contractor doing 40 projects per year, this modest charge can allow a contractor to pay the certificate fee, the cost of the scheme, and training costs to ensure best practice and standards are achieved.
Is your customer really going to question a charge of £25.00 to ensure the job is done right and certificated? And you may be thinking the rogue trader does not have to do this…well, you're right! However, the rogue trader can’t certificate your customers’ works and he or she also jeopardises the customers’ house price. Tell all of your customers exactly why certification is so vital to them.
